The Great Electric Drive
ESB launched The Great Electric Drive for the second year running in February 2014 and invited members of the public and business organisations to join a new team of ecar ambassadors and trial an electric vehicle. Our goal was to recruit people from all over Ireland, across a wide variety of ages, lifestyles, occupations and commuting patterns, as well as organisations for this year's trial. We were delighted with the huge response and received over 20,000 applications - highlighting the continuing high level of public interest in electric vehicles.
In April 2014, 32 new ecar ambassadors were announced. They participated in a year long trial with each ambassador trialling an ecar for a period of up to four months.
Each ecar ambassador drove one of the following electric vehicles, all of which were supplied by the car manufacturers - the Nissan Euro LEAF, Renault Zoe, Renault Twizy, Renault Kangoo Z.E. commercial van, Mitsubishi iMiEV, Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid SUV, Citroen C-Zero and the BMWi3. Their adventures can be found on the ESB ecars blog www.esbecarsblog.ie
In May this year, The Great Electric Drive ended and the results of the trial were released. The 32 ambassadors who were selected covered 200,000 km in ten vehicles with a combined fuel savings of €18,000, eliminating 34 tonnes of CO2 emissions. 80% of journeys were taken in an ecar in preference to the ambassadors own petrol or diesel car and each ambassador travelled an average of 270km per week. Three of the ecar ambassadors have now purchased an electric vehicle.
