The Great Electric Drive
ESB launched The Great Electric Drive for the second year running in February 2014 and invited members of the public and business organisations to join a new team of ecar ambassadors and trial an electric vehicle. Our goal was to recruit people from all over Ireland, across a wide variety of ages, lifestyles, occupations and commuting patterns, as well as organisations for this year's trial.
We were delighted with the huge response and received over 20,000 applications - highlighting the continuing high level of public interest in electric vehicles.
With so many fantastic applicants to choose from, it was a hard task to select our new ecar ambassadors but in April 2014, 32 ambassadors were announced. They are participating in a year long trial with each ambassador trialling an ecar for a period of up to four months.
The new ecar ambassadors are driving one of the following electric vehicles, all of which have been supplied by the car manufacturers - the Nissan Euro LEAF, Nissan e-NV200 commercial van, Renault Zoe, Renault Twizy, Renault Kangoo Z.E. commercial van, Mitsubishi iMiEV, Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid SUV, Citroen C-Zero and the BMWi3. Background to the Electric Car Trial
The introduction of any new technology such as electric vehicles requires extensive research and pilot projects. ESB, in conjunction with EU projects such as TEN-T, Green eMotion, Mobi.Europe etc., is involved in a number of trials and surveys to analyse the charging infrastructure and collect data on consumer behaviour and trends.
