Moving into a Premises in a New Multi-Unit Development

To arrange for your new premises in a new multi-unit development to be connected to the electricity network, you must first obtain the following information:

  1. The Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) for your new premises. This is an unique reference number that identifies your connection point to the electricity network. Your developer or the builder of your multi-unit development will have this number.
  2. The address of your premises. This allows us to link the MPRN to the actual address of your new unit.
  3. The Maximum Import Capacity (MIC) of your new premises. The MIC equates to the contracted electricity capacity for your premises based on information the developer has provided to ESB Networks. Find out more about MIC
Your connection is also assigned a Distribution Use of System (DuoS) group. With the MIC, this forms the basis for calculating the ongoing use of system charges which ESB Networks charges you, via your supplier.

To get all this information, contact the developer or builder of your multi-unit development.

How to get connected

At an earlier stage, the developer will have received a cost quotation and Development Agreement from ESB Networks. Once the money has been paid and the signed Development Agreement has been received by ESB Networks, we commence construction of the necessary electricity infrastructure. We then work in conjunction with the builder /developer to bring the necessary electricity lines and cables to each unit.

The process for making the connection live that applies to you depends on the size of your MIC.

For MIC less than 30kVA

If your MIC is less than 30 Kilovolt-Amperes (kVA) you can contact the Supplier of your choice or you may contact ESB Networks (phone 1850 372 757) to request that your connection be made live.

Call 1850 372 757

You will need the following information when contacting us:
  • Your MPRN
  • The address of the new premises
  • Your name and contact details

The registered electrical contractor who is certifying the electrical wiring in your premises, must also send the ETCI wiring certificate to his/her regulatory body quoting your MPRN and address.

For MIC greater than 30kVA

If your MIC that is greater than 30kVA you must first register with an electricity supplier of your choice.
View a list of all electricity suppliers on the CER web site.

You will need the following information when contacting a supplier:
  • Your MPRN
  • The address of the new premises
  • Your name and contact details
Your supplier will then pass this information on to ESB Networks.

You will then receive a connection agreement from ESB Networks which you must sign and return to the following address:

ESB Networks,
PO Box 29,
Garrycastle,
Athlone,
Co. Westmeath.

In the meantime, the registered electrical contractor who is certifying the electrical wiring in your premises, must also send the ETCI wiring certificate to his/her regulatory body quoting your MPRN and address.

Note: Your new connection cannot be made live until ESB Networks has received both the signed Connection Agreement and confirmation that a valid ETCI wiring certificate has been issued for your premises.

Once the above requirements have been met, ESB Networks can schedule the work required to make your new connection live. The electrical contractor will then switch on the electricity in your premises.
