What is ESB Networks Ltd.?

ESB Networks Ltd. is a ring fenced subsidiary of ESB Group responsible for the network that carries electricity to Ireland's two million domestic, commercial and industrial customers. ESB Networks Ltd. manages both the transmission and distribution system networks, and operates as DSO (Distribution System Operator). We are responsible for building, operating and maintaining overhead electricity power lines and underground cabling throughout the country. (ESB Networks Ltd. is often referred to as Distribution System Operator (DSO) in official documents.)

What does ESB Networks Ltd. do for me?

As Distribution System Operator (DSO), ESB Networks Ltd. is responsible for bringing electricity to your home or business. We must maintain the network to international safety and electrical standards, ensuring electricity supply to all electricity customers. Our responsibilities include restoring power when faults arise on the network and cause loss of supply. ESB Networks Ltd. is responsible for making all new connections to the electricity network and, as Meter Operator, for the installation, maintenance and reading of all electricity meters.

What should I do in the event of loss of supply during storms?

Damage to electricity lines during storms is frequently caused by falling trees. Lightning can also cause severe damage to transformers and other equipment.

What is the electricity voltage in Ireland?

For electricity supplied at Low Voltage by ESB Networks, the nominal standard is 230/400 Volts, 50Hz.. ESB Networks undertakes to deliver single phase electricity within a voltage range of 207 Volts to 253 Volts. This is in accordance with European Standard EN50160.

How big is the electricity network?

Who are customers of ESB Networks Ltd.?

Everybody with an electricity connection in the Republic of Ireland is a customer of ESB Networks Ltd. Other customers include all the electricity supply companies and renewable energy producers.

Do I have to apply to ESB Networks Ltd. to get an electricity supply to my newly built property?

Yes. ESB Networks Ltd. is responsible for bringing electricity to all electricity customers in the Republic of Ireland. We install all new connections. In the case of a new connection please note that you must also register with an electricity supplier in order to purchase electricity.

How many applications for electricity do I need to make?

Only customers wishing to arrange a new connection to a premises will need to make an application to ESB Networks Ltd. If you are an owner/occupier moving into a house, apartment or business premises, you are required to make a separate application to an Electricity Supplier who will sell electricity to you. Is ESB Networks Ltd. obliged to install an electricity supply in my home or premises?

Yes. ESB Networks Ltd. is statutorily obliged to connect your home or premises to the network regardless of your location, subject to certain conditions. After you have made your application for supply to us, these connection conditions will be specified as part of the quotation which you will receive for installing the connection.

Can I get a networks service from another company?

No. ESB Networks is the only company licensed to build new public electricity networks in Ireland.
