Connemara 110kV Reinforcement Project

The Need for the Development

Connemara 110kV Reinforcement Project

In order to cater for increasing growth in Connemara, reinforcement of the electricity network is urgently required.

A 38kV overhead line currently supplies Connemara. This line forms a loop from Salthill through Oughterard, Recess, Screeb and back to Carraroe and Spiddle returning to Salthill. A single tail from Recess supplies Clifden and all points west of it.

Electricity demand in Connemara has grown significantly. In the period from 1994 to 2006, the peak demand for electricity has doubled and it continues to grow.

This presents a risk that supply in terms of continuity and voltage quality can fall below standards on occasion. The only viable method of reinforcement is to upgrade Screeb 38kV station in the townland of Glencoh to a 110kV/38kV station and connect back to the national electricity grid in Galway city via the proposed new 110kV overhead line.
