Ireland's electricity network is currently undergoing a major refurbishment program, extending up to 2010. From 2007 -'10 incl. the cost of the programme for renewing and upgrading existing network plus construction of new lines and transmission /distribution stations is in excess of €2.5 billion. This is part of an ongoing major capital investment programme, much of which has already been completed. The total expenditure on our capital infrastructure during the period 2001 - '10 incl. is €6.5 billion, which is the largest being undertaken by any electricity distribution company in Europe.
One of the major projects within our current investment programme is the completion of the Medium Voltage Network Renewal Project. This project will see all of Ireland's MV (Medium Voltage) overhead electricity network converted to 20kV or refurbished. This is to ensure a secure, high quality supply with adequate capacity for existing and future loads We are also carrying out extensive upgrading work on Low Voltage lines throughout the country under this present phase of the investment programme. This will help to improve the quality of electricity supply for customers, particularly in rural areas.
The work is being carried out by ESB Networks' own staff and also through the use of external contractors in a number of locations.
As Transmission Asset Owner (TAO), ESB Networks has responsibility for the management of the High Voltage Transmission capital and maintenance work programmes. The HV Transmission System comprises 110 /220 /400kV lines and stations which are used to transport power from the various electricity generators to locations where it is needed around the country. ESB Networks role is to ensure that the Transmission System is developed and maintained in accordance with the requirements set down by EirGrid, the Transmission System Operator (TSO).
Capital projects currently under way include the building of several new High Voltage Substations and the erection /installation of the associated overhead lines and underground cables.
