How to Read a Meter

There are two main types of electricity meter in use in business premises. These are:

  1. Revolving disc (traditional electro-mechanical) meter
    Irrespective of the manufacturer the general format of these meters is very similar. Each meter has a revolving disc and one or two rows of numbers. Three formats for such meters are in common use (as shown below).
  2. Electronic meters
    The two most commonly used formats for such meters are shown below.

Note: Some premises may have more than one format of meter installed.

Standard Meter

Standard Meter

This is the most common type of meter. It has numbers and a revolving disc. It records all usage on one register.

Day/Night Meter

Day and Night Meter

This meter has 2 rows of numbers and one revolving disc. One row records daytime consumption and the other records consumption at night. (This is typically installed at the request of customers who use power at night.)

Wattless Meter

Wattless Meter

This type of meter has 1 row of numbers and one revolving disc. It records reactive consumption (kVArh). Not all business customers have this meter installed.

Electronic Meter Type A

This is the most commonly installed electronic meter and is known as the 'Vision' meter. It has a scrolling electronic display.
