Meter Security

An electricity meter is a device that measures electricity consumption in your home. It is an important and potentially dangerous piece of equipment that must not be interfered with in any way.

Meter interference and your safety

Unfortunately, every year we discover a small number of people who interfere with their meters. Such interference poses significant dangers to them, to our staff, to members of the public and to the emergency services. Under the provisions of the Energy (Miscellaneous Provisions ) Act 1995 an offence of unlawfully interfering with any article (including a meter) owned by the ESB can carry penalties (on conviction in a District Court) ranging from a fine to 12 months in prison or both.

Meter interference is easily detected and we have a team dedicated to identifying those involved. It is our policy to take criminal proceedings against such people.

Suspected cases of meter interference can be advised to us confidentially.
