How to read your electricity meter

To read your meter, simply note the numbers shown in the display from left to right.

Standard Meter

Make sure to write down any zeros, including any at the start of the reading. If the meter does not have an electronic display, ignore any figures in red.

There are two main types of meter:

Standard Meter The most common is the mechanical or spinning disk meter.
Electronic Meter Electronic meters are now installed in some domestic premises.

There are two main metering tariffs:

Single tariff Standard Meter Single tariff: This records all electricity usage on one dial/register over 24 hours.
Day/Night tariff Standard Meter Day/Night tariff: This meter has two dials (if mechanical) or one scrollable display (if electronic).
