Connect a Generator that will Operate in Parallel with the Electricity Network

This page explains how to connect a generator which operates in parallel with electricity distribution system (even for brief periods). This type of generator is typically used in the following circumstances:

  • For a business which uses generator(s) to reduce its electricity import at certain times
  • For a business which uses generator(s) in peak-lopping or peak-shaving schemes

In general such generators cannot be used to export electricity onto the electricity network. That is, you cannot use such generators to supply or sell electricity via ESB Networks' distribution network. Generators which are given the status of Exporting Auto-producers would be an exception to this.

If you wish to connect a generator that is intended to export energy onto the electricity network, please visit one of the following pages:

Note: If the generator is connected through a change-over switch or other approved means, such that parallel operation with the distribution system is not possible, then no application to ESB Networks is necessary. However, installation must still comply with the relevant ETCI rules.

Follow this guide to connect a generator

Step 1:
Get an Ordnance Survey Map and Site Plan

Obtain an Ordnance Survey map (scale 1:2500-1:10560) that shows the location of your new generator. Mark the location of your new generator with a red pen.

Obtain a detailed site plan (scale 1:100-1:500) showing your new generator.

Step 2:
Get an Application Form

Complete the ESB Networks Application Form number NC5.

Download the Application Form NC5 (PDF | 984KB)
or
CallSave 1850 372 757 to request a copy.

Note: If you are using Application Form number NC5 for an existing connection, you must also include the existing Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) for the site. The MPRN is a unique reference number that identifies your connection point on the electricity network.

Step 3:
Return the Application Form
Send the completed Application Form NC5 and all necessary documentation to the following address:

ESB Network Services Bureau,
PO Box 29,
Garrycastle,
Athlone,
Co. Westmeath,
Ireland
Step 4:
Receive a quotation and connection agreement

Based on the information on your application form and if no export of electricity is involved, ESB Networks will issue you with a quotation and a New Connection Agreement within 30 working days.

Connection Quotation

Download the application fees document to find out how quotation fees are calculated (PDF | 69KB)

Note: The appropriate Distribution Use of System (DuoS) tariff is determined in accordance with the Rules for Application of DUoS Tariffs (PDF | 413KB) as approved by CER (04/300). DuoS is the charge approved by CER for the use of the distribution network to carry electricity.

Connection Agreement

This agreement will include:
  • The Maximum Import Capacity (MIC) of your connection. The MIC equates to your contracted electricity capacity. Find out more about MIC
  • The Maximum Export Capacity (MEC) of your connection (which in this case equates to zero kilovolt-amperes (kVA)). The MEC is the total capacity you are permitted to export onto the national grid.

The agreement will also reflect the embedded generation capacity and the mandatory interface protection requirements (known as G10 interface requirements) with which you must comply. The testing of the interface protection must be witnessed by ESB Networks' personnel.

For an appointment please contact ESB Networks:
CallSave: 1850 372 757
Email: dsogenerators@esb.ie

Please note that prior arrangements will need to be made for these tests with ESB Networks.

Details are contained in the Conditions Governing Connection at 38 Kilovolts / Medium Voltage (PDF | 514KB).

Step 5:
Return payment

Post your payment and connection agreement (in the envelope provided) to:

ESB Network Services Bureau,
Garrycastle,
Athlone,
Co. Westmeath.

Cheque, postal order and bank drafts are acceptable. (No cash.)

Step 6:
Witness test date

The technical data from the completed application will be evaluated to ensure there are no technical or protection omissions which may need to be corrected prior to the Witness Test Date.

This data should be submitted at least six weeks prior to any agreed Witness Test Date.

It is also required to submit preliminary test results on the installed interface protection.
