Generator Connections

The content in this section explains how to connect a generator to the electricity network.

Gate 3 - Renewable Generation Group Processing
Gate 3 is the third renewable group processing directive proposed by the CER.

Connect a generator that operates in parallel with the electricity network
This is relevant to businesses that want to reduce their electricity import by having their own source of power, or by businesses in peak-lopping or peak-shaving schemes. Such generators cannot be used to supply or sell electricity via the national grid.

Connect a standby generator
Standby generators are used by businesses that require emergency generation. They cannot be used to export or sell electricity onto the electricity network. In addition, they cannot operate in parallel with the electricity network.

Connect a generator that is used to supply or sell electricity
This includes Wind Farm, Landfill Gas, Solar Power and Combined Heat & Power (CHP) facilities. Such generators may be used to supply or sell electricity via the national grid.

Connect a micro-generator
Micro-generation is the term which applies when a private individual (e.g. a householder) installs a small generator on his/her property for the purpose of producing electricity for his/her own use.

Performance on Generator Modification Requests processed within last 12 months (PDF | 12KB)
CER and the Gate 3 Liaison Group have requested that the System Operators each publish their performance in relation to processing of Generator modification requests. The above link shows how long it took to process modifications in general over the past 12 months. It is intended to publish these statistics quarterly on a rolling 12 month basis.

Note: This information only applies to customers who currently are (or will be) connected to the electricity network.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is your responsibility to ensure that a generator is installed by a registered electrical contractor to ETCI standards, and that it complies with all regulations governing electrical generators.
