About Electricity Suppliers

What is the role of an Electricity Supplier?

A licenced electricity supplier is a retailer of electricity to the final domestic and business customer. Customers register with a supplier of their choice to purchase their electrical energy and are billed by this supplier.

Electricity Suppliers in the Irish Electricity market:

Ireland has one of the fastest-growing electricity markets in the developed world. It grew by over 40 per cent over the past 10 years, far ahead of growth in the rest of Europe.

While the market is fully liberalised, the development of competition is still in its early stages, and many customers still do not have a choice of supplier, because suppliers may not have the additional generation in place or may not be targeting that section of customers yet.

The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) licences and monitors all suppliers, while also controlling the prices charged by ESB Customer Supply. Independent suppliers are free to compete with ESB Customer Supply and offer different prices and services.

ESB Networks provides services on behalf of all licenced electricity suppliers in the Republic of Ireland, serving all electricity customers.

Choosing Your Electricity Supplier:

Under market rules all customers are free to contact an electricity supplier of their choice to request an electricity supply. A full list of licenced suppliers is available from the CER website: www.cer.ie.
