Safety & Environment

ESB Networks is ever-conscious of its responsibility to provide a safe and secure electricity infrastructure with due regard to protecting people, property and the natural environment.

Electricity is so much part of modern living that we can often take it for granted. It is a powerful and versatile energy but can be dangerous if not used properly, so it is essential to be aware of potential dangers and always to make safety a priority.

Hazardous situations can arise from a variety of sources. Typical examples include fallen overhead wires, trucks, excavation, scaffolding, ladders, hoists and cranes. People often don't recognise the potential electricity related hazards associated with leisure pursuits, most commonly sailing, fishing, flying kites and erection of goal-posts on playing pitches. Vandalism can create unsafe situations in public places, particularly in relation to minipillars, public lighting columns and substations, while storm damage can create hazards which take time to repair.

Since our wires and cables traverse the length and breadth of the country, we are conscious of the delicate fabric of the environment and have strict policies and procedures in place to ensure that minimum impact results from our activities.

In these pages we endeavour, also, to provide some information and advice on the safe use of electricity in the home.
