Lough Ree Power
- Location: Lanesborough, Co Longford
- Technology: Milled Peat
- Capacity: 100MW
- Commissioned: 2004
Lough Ree Power Station is a milled peat burning generating station located on the bank of the River Shannon adjacent to the village of Lanesborough.
It comprises one 100MW Circulating Fluidized Bed Boiler and Turbine.
Lough Ree Power, the third largest peat-fired power station in the country, was commissioned in 2004 and the station has a 15-year contract to burn peat supplied by Bord Na Mona.
The power station was constructed as a replacement to the ageing 85MW Lanesboro Power Station.
The new plant, using a combination of boiler design and lime inherent in the fuel, allowed ESB to reduce emissions of both Nox and SOx to well under EU limits. In addition, modern stack cleaning technology means that dust emissions are reduced dramatically. The high efficiency bag filter technologies currently employed were not available during the lifetime of the older plant Lanesborough and Shannonbridge power stations.
