Mariner's Compass

The Mariner's Compass is one of the most colourful and finely rendered images in the collection. It also survives is relatively good condition. Many of the images on the scrolls have been have been blackened with what may be coal dust., or other effects from being displayed in school rooms with open coal fires.

The Introductory Lectures stress the practical importance of the compass, but also dwell on the metaphorical and scriptural significance of such guidance, advising children " if you pay attention and try to improve yourselves you may receive instruction from everything you see, as it may teach you to reflect upon their various uses, and make you feel how much gratitude you owe to our great Creator for all his mercies to us".
