Merrion Square Open Day Saturday 29th August 2009, 10 am-5pm

Now in its fifth year, the Merrion Square Open Day is a day of special events celebrating the rich and diverse heritage of Merrion Square and its surroundings. Explore Georgian Dublin in a relaxed and informal programme, taking in the houses, gardens, and churches at the heart of the city. Visitors will have an opportunity to see properties not often open to the public and enjoy special talks, walks, workshops, and music in historic churches in a programme with something for everyone.

The event is organised by Electricity Supply Board (Number 29 Fitzwilliam Street Lower), in association with the Irish Architectural Archive, the Irish Georgian Society, St. Stephen's Parish Church, the Irish Landmark Trust, the Mercy International Centre, the National University of Ireland, the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland, The Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, St. Andrew's Parish Church, and the University of Notre Dame.

10am Guided Tour of 58 Merrion Square, home of Daniel O’Connell from 1809-1847. with Professor Kevin Whelan, University of Notre Dame, Keuogh Centre* (B)

10am Meet at Rutland Fountain opposite National Gallery of Ireland for 'Through the fanlights – the architectural achievement of Merrion Square' with Nicki Mathews, Conservation Officer, Dublin City Council. (B)

10.30am Guided Tour of 45 Merrion Square, home of the Irish Architectural Archive *
11.00am Guided Tour of 63 Merrion Square, home of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland *(B)

11.30pm 'Window on Baggot Street', Guided Tour of the Mercy Chapel & Catherine Mc Auley House on Baggot Street. (B)

12.00pm 'Music in the Pepper Canister'. Listen to the sounds of an 18th century organ, built by a contemporary of G.F.Handel. St. Stephen’s Church Mount Street Crescent.

1.00pm 'From Church to Church: a walking tour of the Merrion Square Quarter,' with writer & historian Peter Costello, starting at St.Andrew’s Church on Westland Row and ending in the Pepper Canister.

2.00pm 'Georgian Style and Splendour: Fashionable Dress in the Eighteenth Century' with art and fashion historian Sara Donaldson, IPAV and Griffith College Dublin. Number 8 Merrion Square home of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland.

3.00pm 'Poems in the Pepper Pot' A reading of contemporary poetry by Theo Dorgan & Paula Meehan, celebrating Dublin’s urban environment & heritage in the unique atmosphere of the Pepper Canister Church.

4.00pm 'Meet at Number 70 Merrion Square for 'A Literary Walk around the Square' explore the literary and cultural heritage of Merrion Square with author and critic Paul O'Brien.

4.00pm 'Childhood in Georgian Dublin'. Explore the life of children through the collection of the Georgian House Museum. Kieran Burns, Curator Number Twenty Nine. 29 Fitzwilliam Street Lower. (B)

* Guided Tour Schedule
Guided Tours will run on the half hour throughout the day in Number 45 Merrion Square.
Guided Tours will run in Number 63 Merrion Square at set times until 4pm. (B)
Guided Tours will run through out the day in Number 58 Merrion Square on the hour from 10am to 4pm. (B) Professor Whelan, will lead another tour starting at 11am.
