Refurbishment projects
Ireland's electricity network is currently undergoing a €2.5 billion refurbishment program, begun in 2007 and due to end in 2010.
The programme covers the renewal and upgrade of the existing network, plus construction of new lines and transmission/distribution stations.
This is part of a decade-long capital investment programme begun in 2001 and ending in 2010, much of which has already been completed. The €6.5 billion programme is largest being undertaken by any electricity distribution company in Europe. Medium and low voltage projects
One of the major projects in our current investment programme is the Medium Voltage Network Renewal Project.
It will see all of Ireland's MV (Medium Voltage) overhead electricity network either converted to 20kV or refurbished, in order to ensure a secure, high quality supply with adequate capacity for existing and future loads.
We are also extensively upgrading Low Voltage (LV) lines throughout the country to improve the quality of electricity supply, particularly in rural areas.
ESB Networks staff are carrying out the work alongside external contractors in a number of locations.
Higher voltage projects
As Transmission Asset Owner (TAO), ESB Networks has responsibility for the management of all High Voltage (HV) transmission capital and maintenance work programmes.
The HV transmission system comprises 110 /220 /400kV lines and stations, used to transport power from the various electricity generators to locations around the country.
ESB Networks' role is to ensure that the transmission system is developed and maintained in accordance with the requirements set down by EirGrid, the Transmission System Operator (TSO).
Capital projects currently under way include the building of several new HV substations and the erection and installation of associated overhead lines and underground cables.
