Interview
How did you go about getting your current job?
I applied for a position of graduate engineer with ESBI just before my final year exams upon recommendation from a friend of mine. I applied online and received an offer of an interview. I travelled to Dublin for an interview and was informed via a phone call the next morning that I was successful.
What are the main tasks and responsibilities of your job?
Some of the main responsibilities I have taken on include the following; ensuring a design is safe and fit for purpose, through a full review of its design, using both engineering experience and advanced analytical software.
I have also been responsible for the development of a technology in the power plant group in ESBI where I am leading the development of knowledge on CO2 capture for the power plant department.
My responsibilities on site included ensuring work is undertaken as per specification, ensuring all mandatory inspection and NDT work is undertaken.
Does your job allow you to have a career you are happy with?
My job with ESBI has allowed me pursue the lifestyle I want so far. I play hurling and there has never been an issue with having to leave work early to return home for a match.
ESBI is also flexible when it comes to personal issues that you may have to take care of. Hours of work are also very amenable to leisure activities and for personal time.
What subjects did you take in school and how have these influenced your career path?
I always knew I wanted some form of a technical or design job, so I took the following subjects for leaving cert; (Maths, English, Irish - because you have to) Physics, Engineering, Building Construction and Agricultural Science. I believe these subjects have all helped me throughout my college days as they gave a great basis of what is taught in college.
What kinds of work experience would provide a good background for this position?
Technical work experience or machine operation would be of benefit. I have previously worked as a fitter and welder during summer holidays. Any form of design work, maintenance or drafting would all be useful.
What advice would you give someone considering this job?
To be an engineer, a person must firstly have a degree. Having an interest in what you are working at is always half the battle. Being technically minded is also a great benefit.
