What is Micro-generation?

Micro-generation is the term used to describe small scale generators which can be used by customers to generate their own electricity.

Examples of micro-generation technology are:

  • Wind turbines (WTG)
  • Photo-voltaic solar panels (PV)
  • Water turbines (Hydro)
  • Combined heat and power from gas/oil (CHP)

Surplus power

If you have a micro-generator installed, you can export any surplus not used by you onto ESB Networks' Low Voltage system, provided you comply with technical and safety standards and do not exceed a rated maximum output of:

  • 5.75 kW when the connection is single phase
  • 11 kW when the connection is three phase.
