About the images
Amorebieta
Amorebieta Power Plant (Bizkaia Energia Limited), located near Bilbao in the Basque Region of Northern Spain, is a 755MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant. It has been in operation since 2005. ESBI has a 50% shareholding in Bizkaia with Osaka Gas. The plant is tolled by Shell España. ESBI is also the operation & maintenance contractor at Amorebieta. Following this successful investment, ESBI is now developing an 860MW CCGT power plant at Asturias on the north coast of Spain, as well as building two 50MW wind farms in the Basque region of northern Spain.
Carnsore Open Day
Over 2,500 people visited ESBI's Carnsore Point Wind Farm in Wexford on an open day to mark Global Wind Day 2009. The wind farm is located on a very dramatic site - 200 acres overlooking the sea at Carnsore Point. It consists of 14 wind turbines, each 75 metres in height, powers 9,000 homes in Wexford and saves 30,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
SeaGen
The SeaGen device is the world's first commercial scale tidal power generating device, deployed at Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland. ESBI is investing €4m in Marine Current Turbines Ltd (MCT), the company that designed and developed the pioneering 1.2MW tidal stream device. SeaGen is capable of providing enough clean electricity to power 1,000 homes. ESB Independent Energy has signed a five year power purchase agreement to buy all electricity output from SeaGen to be sold as part of its green energy offering, making ESB one of the first utilities in the world to provide tidal energy to its customers.
Coolkeeragh
ESBI owns, operates and maintains Coolkeeragh Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant. Coolkeeragh is a £206 million investment in the energy infrastructure of Northern Ireland and has been in operation since June 2005. The 400MW plant uses the latest large-scale gas turbine technology and uses cleaner fuel and higher efficiency technology. It is also fitted with a dual-fuel capability to ensure security of supply. The electricity generated by the station is sold by ESB Independent Energy to retail customers in Ireland, north and south.
Derrybrien
ESBI's Derrybrien Wind Farm is situated on the slopes of the Slieve Aughty Mountains, 12km south of Loughrea in Midwest Ireland. It consists of 70 x 850kW turbines which provide enough electricity to power 50,000 homes. Aertech, a division of ESBI, provides a total engineering solution to the wind energy industry incorporating all wind farm services from design and assessment to commercial operation.
Croke Park
Michael McNicholas, ESBI Executive Director, is pictured with Peter McKenna, Croke Park Stadium Director. ESBI's independent energy provider, ESBIE, supplies Croke Park with all its electricity needs. The 4.67MW contract sees ESBIE providing power to one of the biggest sporting stadia in Europe.
Mountain Lodge
Eadaoin Farrell, manager of Mountain Lodge Wind Farm near Cootehill, Co Cavan. The wind farm consists of 23 x 1.5MW wind turbines, which can harvest up to 34.5MW of renewable energy. Mountain Lodge Wind Farm produces enough electricity for more than 17,000 homes and saves more than 85,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
