21st January 2007: 50 ESB Networks staff have travelled to the UK to assist in restoring power to thousands of homes left without electricitiy in the wake of the storms that swept across Europe on Thursday and Friday.
The crews, from Dublin, Navan, Portlaoise, Tuam and Athlone, traveled in a convoy of twenty seven fully equipped vehicles and equipment following a request from the electricity utilities in the UK.
Several thousand homes are still without power following damage to the network across the United Kingdom after record-breaking winds swept across Ireland and Europe on Thursday.
Four supervisors accompany the 16 ESB crews and they are working in the Manchester and Liverpool areas under direction from Manweb, the electricity utility in the area.
The crews set off early this morning to travel on the first ferry to Wales. The restoration work may see the ESB crews operating in the UK for at least a week.
