ESB ElectricAid Ireland helps Cork Simon Community
5th February 2007: ElectricAid Ireland, the ESB Corporate Social Responsibility fund is providing a support grant of €25,000 to Cork's Simon Community to purchase a van for the charity's nightly run.
ESB ElectricAid Ireland was set up in 2005 to provide financial support for charities in Ireland working in the areas of homelessness and suicide prevention. ESB staff chose these areas of concern. Since its foundation ESB ElectricAid Ireland has dispersed in excess of €1.5million in funding to projects across the country.
Presenting the cheque to the Simon Community, ESB Deputy Chief Executive, Aidan O Regan praised the work of the Simon Community.
He said the work done by groups like Simon is invaluable in tackling homelessness: "We in ESB are delighted to be able to support community based projects, such as the Cork Simon Community. Homelessness is one of the biggest social problems facing Ireland in the twenty first century and the work being carried out by Simon and and other initiatives, is an important measure in trying to address this problem".
The Simon Community in Cork is one of eight projects to receive funding through the ESB ElectricAid Ireland. ElectricAid Ireland has provided support for eighteen different initiatives in the Munster Region over the past eighteen months.
Nine projects working in Suicide Prevention and Nine Projects working in Homelessness have all been supported with a total spend in excess of €150,000 in Munster alone.
