ESB statement regarding the precautionary closure of West Offaly power plant
5th June 2007: ESB can confirm that it has closed the West Offaly power plant as a precautionary measure, following the discovery of corrosion in the gas flue area of the plant.
The problem came to light during the annual overhaul at Lough Ree Power plant, a sister plant to the West Offaly station. The Lough Ree plant has been off since May for the annual scheduled overhaul, during inspections of the absorber corrosion was discovered.
ESB then focused on testing at the West Offaly plant while it was running, following consultations with the plant manufacturer, Foster Wheeler, the decision was made on the 1st June to switch off West Offaly power.
ESB staff and representatives of the manufacturer are carrying out a technical evaluation of the problem. The exact length of the outage is unclear until the results of that evaluation are known.
