ESB statement on estimated billing process
28th October 2007: ESB has been working closely with the Commission for Energy Regulation regarding a review of the current estimated billing process.
Under the present system, ESB applies the current charges to bills that have been estimated for some time. ESB and the CER have agreed that it may be more appropriate for estimated bills to be calculated on a pro-rata basis relative to the tariffs that applied over the period of usage.
CER has confirmed that ESB did not profit from the present estimated billing method.
CER has asked ESB to review charges applied to customers' accounts for the past three years applying the pro-rata system. If the application of the new charging method results in a saving of €5 or more for a customer, ESB will credit the account with the sum involved.
ESB expects that less than 100,000 of its customers will benefit from the review with the typical credit expected to be between €5 and €10. It is planned that credits will be applied to bills issued during the first quarter of 2008.
