ESBI completes major consultancy project for ESKOM in advance of FIFA World Cup
9th June 2009: ESB International (ESBI) has announced the completion of a major electricity project in South Africa to help power the way for the next year's FIFA World Cup.
The project in the Western Cape Province involves the installation of 2,100 megawatts of new electricity generating capacity.
The electricity will be used to power football stadiums across South Africa.
As part of the project, fourteen gas turbines were installed across two sites - one in Ankerlig, approximately 40km north of Cape Town, and the other in Gourikwa, Mossel Bay, approximately 400km to the east of the city.
The new plant provides much needed generation capacity to meet peak time electricity demand in South Africa.
ESBI is a member of Eskom's international consultancy panel and recently entered into a new professional services framework agreement with the company. Under this agreement, ESBI has been working with Eskom on the development of 200 MW of wind generation in the Western Cape.
Commenting on the completion of the new plant, Liam Walsh, Manager of Business Development and International Consultancy at ESBI said, "This is the first significant power investment in South Africa since the early 1990's".
"We have developed a very strong working relationship with Eskom over a number of years and we look forward to partnering with them on future projects in the region", he added.
