Safety in construction

Safety responsibilities

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, employers have a responsibilty to ensure the safety of their employees and visitors to their premises.

Safety on construction sites

The Construction Regulations 2006 (SI 504) (PDF | 329KB) makes contractors in charge of construction sites responsible for protecting their workers from the dangers associated with electricity.

At ESB, we work closely with organisations including the Health and Safety Authority, the Electro Technical Council of Ireland and contractors organisations to promote safety and safe practices.

Common hazards

There are two distinct electrical dangers associated with electricity in construction work:

  • Use of electricity during construction activities
  • Working in close proximity to overhead electric lines and underground electric cables
