Sustainability & Environment
For generations to come
Our vision
ESB is one of the key players in the development and support of ecars. Sustainability, both within the company and in the services we provide are integral to our corporate strategy. Specific targets and initiatives, such as ecars, are set out in our Strategic Framework 2020
Critical to the take up of ecars is the provision of the infrastructure and ESB, as the single owner/operator of the electricity distribution system is responsible for implementing the charging infrastructure across Ireland. It will be a comprehensive network of charging points and will be an open system accessible to all supply companies and all types of ecars.
In December 2009, ESB installed the first on-street charging points in Dublin and they are now being deployed in other locations across the country.
ESB has a nationwide roll out plan with targets that reflect the availability of ecars in Ireland. Our goal is by 2011:
- 2000 home charging units installed
- 1500 public charge posts available across Ireland

ESB is collaborating with other stakeholders such as the Irish Government, motor industry and key players to ensure its success. All parties are working together to reach the target of 10% of all vehicles to be electric by 2020.
ESB is proactively involved in a range of activities such as ecars research, trials and technology standards, crucial for successful ecars adoption.
