Why your contribution matters
Have you ever felt that you would like to do your bit for the environment but don't know where to start?
To help get you started, we've prepared 10 easy steps that can really help. These are simple things that thousands of people already do every day, so why not join in and do your bit?
How can our actions make a difference?
Well, just think about this - every 6-pack of cans you recycle saves enough electricity to run a TV non-stop for 3 days. Think of the difference that would make if we all recycled our drinks cans.
There are lots of other things that we can do too - recycling is just one of the 10 steps you can take.
A national effort
The steps form part of the Department of Environment and Local Government's environmental awareness campaign called It's easy to make a difference.
The campaign's national survey on the environment revealed a huge gap between our generally positive attitude to the environment and our everyday behaviour.
While 60% of people said they would like to do more to help the environment, when it came down to something as simple as recycling glass, only ¼ of the population said they do so regularly - despite almost ¾ admitting glass recycling is available to them!
The campaign tries to bridge this gap by making people more aware of how simple it is to help create a better environment using the 10 easy steps.
Saving the earth at your supermarket
In an innovative move to influence Ireland's shopping behaviour, the It's easy to make a difference team also created an in-store information campaign with Tesco, SuperValu and Superquinn that highlights environmentally friendly shopping choices.
It encourages people to buy products that will lead to less waste and concentrates on the shopping-related areas of plastic bags, packaging and recycling.
