For generations to come
Renewable electricity
By 2020, ESB will deliver one third of its electricity from renewable generatio.
This will include:
- Over 1,500 MW of wind generation
- Wave, tidal and biomass energy
- District heating
It investment and application of our expertise in new research, development and demonstration.
Wind farm development
ESB is committed to deliver 600 MW of on-shore wind generation in Ireland by 2012, with a further 800 MW of wind generation by 2020.
We are also targeting 200 MW of on-shore wind generation in Britain by 2012.
Key projects
The Mountain Lodge 31 MW wind farm project was delivered to commercial operation during 2008.
More recently, an 18 MW wind farm site was acquired in Crockagarran, Northern Ireland.
A 77 MW wind energy portfolio, consisting of various operational wind farms and development sites, was acquired throughout Ireland.
Ocean energy
Ocean energy technology is currently in its infancy.
There are a number of small projects in Europe varying from conceptual designs and small-scale models to full-scale prototypes of ocean energy plants.
ESBI is currently collaborating with industry and research institutions to identify technologies with commercial potential which might progress our ambition of having 150MW of ocean energy by 2020.
In 2008, ESBI invested in a company specialising in tidal energy design and development that has deployed a 1.2MW tidal stream turbine in Strangford Lough, Co.Down.
Other opportunities with emerging ocean energy technologies are currently under evaluation.
