For the past seven years ESB has worked with Web Summit using the Spark of Genius Competition to find Ireland’ most promising start-ups.
Every year high potential Irish start-ups submit entries between August and mid-September for a chance to compete in a pitching competition at the Web Summit. The competition also provides young Irish start-ups a global platform to pitch and immense exposure at the largest gathering of investors in Europe, The Web Summit. Judges consisted of Paul Mulvaney, Executive Director of ESB Innovation , Brian Caulfield at Draper Espirit, Kathleen Warner entrepreneur in residence at Techstars and Stephen Shortt an investor at EOAccelerator who chose Coroflo as the overall winner. Coroflo’s mission is to help mothers ensure that their children are getting enough breast milk,
Rosanne Longmore explained that the issue is much more widespread than one might initially perceive with three quarters of women who start breastfeeding stop by 6 weeks for fear their infant is not getting enough nutrition. Even Richard Branson endorsed the Coroflo, when he met Rosanne to discuss the product over the Summer, commenting on his own daughters concerns as she is soon to become a mother.
The 2016 Winner, OpenBack Similarly has gone from strength to strength boasting some of the world’s largest mobile and technology companies as clients.
In 2014, ESB Spark of Genius winner, SmartThings, was sold to electronics giant, Samsung for a reported $200,000,000. The company was not even a year old at the time of entering the ESB Spark of Genius and it was sold within 2 years.
Another entrant, ViddyAd came first place in the Spark of Genius competition in 2013. ViddyAd Founder, Gráinne Barron, is listed as one of Ireland’s most influential business leaders in technology, PWC Most Innovative Startup winner and is listed in the top 50 most powerful business women by the Sunday Independent. ViddyAd was most recently honoured in the Silicon Valley 50 awards and has gone on to win Richard Branson’s extreme tech challenge.
