International Women's Day with Geraldine Moloney

People of ESB

To celebrate International Women's Day, ESB showcased some of the inspirational women across ESB who are having an impact on our Brighter Future Strategy including Geraldine Moloney from Strategy, Innovation and Transformation

Role:

X_Site Manager – Corporate Innovation

Tell us about your business area?

Our role @ ESB X_Site is to provide a supportive environment for our people to create, collaborate and commercialise new business opportunities on behalf of ESB Group.

How does your role impact on our Brighter Future Strategy?

I am very fortunate to work in X_Site as we get to work with a very diverse group of enthusiastic and experienced people drawn from our internal talent pool and leaders in the Irish and Global startup and business communities.

The ideas that we get from ESB staff show, not just the creativity and knowledge of the people who work here, but also that everyone is thinking about the future and ESBs role in it.

What are you most proud of?

Our happy marriage with two healthy, fun and smart children. (They all made me say that!)

Which mentors or role models have positively impacted your career journey?

My granny; she will be 102 this year and had a career as a teacher/ deputy principal, as well as helping in my Grandad's pharmacy overnight - developing pictures, while raising four children. She lives in North Donegal and commuted to her school in Derry, so the marriage ban couldn't stop her from working.

The last time I saw her was just before Christmas - when we were allowed to travel - and she said that 2020 has been the strangest time; this from a woman who sat her finals the day after Belfast was bombed in WW2!

She has taught me so much – resilience, persistence, independence, collaboration, honesty and above all never being afraid to do something, especially as a woman. If it feels right, just do it.

What advice would you give to your 18-year old self?

Follow your passion and trust yourself to make the right personal decisions. I had an undergrad college lecturer who advised me not to go into data and computer science.

Unfortunately, I listened. It took me three years to brush off the bad advice, trust myself and go study in an area that fascinated me. Now I am in my dream job; combining my Business & IT skills to help ESB build a bridge to our collective Brighter Future.
