November 26, 2019. Electric Ireland has today announced a new deal to supply 8 million kwh of green electricity per annum to Cork Airport, Ireland’s fastest growing and most punctual airport. The contract was negotiated through Energy Services Limited based in Cork, daa procurement and Cork Airport Management. This switch to 100% green electricity forms part of Cork Airport’s sustainability strategy and Carbon Management Plan.

This latest investment is part of Cork Airport’s push to grow its business in a sustainable manner. While passenger numbers are expected to increase by over 8% this year, Cork Airport remains on course to continuously reduce energy consumption year on year since 2009. Cork Airport has previously won the SEAI Public Sector Energy award and has already surpassed the 2020 National Public Sector Energy Reduction Targets which are validated annually through the SEAI’s Monitoring and Reporting Programme.

Dermot McArdle, Head of Business Markets for Electric Ireland, said: “We are committed to assisting businesses in meeting their sustainability objectives through significant changes to 100% green electricity. As Ireland’s leading electricity, gas and energy supplier to large energy users, Electric Ireland has proven experience in helping users such as Cork Airport. Our competitive pricing has also allowed Cork Airport to easily make this switch.”

Bill Daly, Head of Asset Care, at Cork Airport said: “This commitment to switch to 100% green electricity forms part of Cork Airports overall sustainability strategy. Cork Airport has previously won the SEAI Public Sector Sustainable Energy Award and we are currently achieving an annual energy consumption reduction of 48% from a 2006-2009 baseline, independently validated through the SEAI Monitoring and Reporting Programme. We are fully committed to developing environmental standards in all areas of our business in order to ensure a safe and efficient airport facility. Switching to 100% green energy is a further endorsement of our sustainability agenda at Cork Airport.”

Electric Ireland’s business markets unit supplies, and provides expert advice on, electricity, gas and innovative energy services for businesses in Ireland from large users of energy like manufacturing plants and datacentres through to medium sized operations and small businesses. Electric Ireland works with organisations from a variety of sectors including pharmaceutical, manufacturing, tech, food and hospitality to provide flexible and affordable energy solutions.

Cork Airport is Ireland’s fastest growing airport and has been named Airport Council International (ACI) best airport in Europe serving under 5 million passengers. Cork Airport is committed to responsible energy management and has developed a Carbon Management Plan that promotes energy efficiency throughout the campus and supports other scheduled energy reduction, water conservation and waste reduction initiatives.
