We see it in extreme weather patterns, rising sea levels, water shortages and disruption to biodiversity and ecosystems. Electricity has a transformative role to play in tackling climate change. It can reduce carbon and other harmful greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector.
Our Purpose
Since our establishment in 1927, ESB has been committed to driving society forward and delivering a net zero energy future for our customers and communities. This strong sense of purpose is reflected in our unwavering commitment to tackling some of the biggest challenges we face as a society, including climate change.
We are working to deliver a new energy future based on reliable, affordable, zero carbon electricity. We are building on the work we have done for over a century to transform lives and enable social and economic progress and change. This is our purpose.

ESB is taking urgent and focused action to achieve net zero emissions by 2040. We are putting in place the infrastructure and services to enable our customers and society to live more sustainably. We are balancing this with our fundamental role to maintain reliable and affordable electricity for our customers, communities, and the economy.
Our 2040 Strategy
ESB’s strategy Driven to Make a Difference: Achieving Net Zero by 2040 sets out a clear pathway to achieve Net Zero in a way that supports our customers and ensures ESB’s continued growth and ability to invest. Our strategy is informed by developments in the external environment and driven by our enduring commitment to deliver a brighter future for all.
UN Sustainable Development Goals
Our strategy directly support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which provide a global blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all by 2030. ESB is focusing particularly on three of the SDGs where we can make a lasting and tangible difference.
- Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
- Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.
- Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
